Felt Fern Leaf Whole (Pyrrosia sheareri) is the dried frond of a leathery evergreen fern traditionally used in Chinese medicine (TCM) for its cooling, diuretic, and detoxifying properties. Known in TCM as Shi Wei, this herb has long been valued for its ability to clear heat from the lungs and bladder, relieve cough, and promote smooth urination.
In classical TCM texts, Felt Fern Leaf is described as a sweet, slightly bitter, and cooling herb that enters the Lung and Bladder channels. It is traditionally used to treat heat-induced urinary discomfort, cough with phlegm, and bleeding from the urinary tract. Shi Wei is also included in formulas to resolve damp-heat, ease painful urination, and cool the blood while maintaining a gentle, harmonizing nature.
Modern studies of Pyrrosia sheareri identify flavonoids, triterpenes, and phenolic acids that contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and diuretic actions. These findings align with its historical use as a lung- and kidney-supporting herb that helps to remove excess heat and toxins from the body.
Each batch of Felt Fern Leaf Whole (Pyrrosia sheareri) is carefully harvested from shaded forest habitats and air-dried to preserve its natural green hue, fine texture, and cooling energy. When decocted, the leaves produce a light, slightly bitter infusion used in herbal formulas for respiratory, urinary, and heat-clearing purposes.
Note: Felt Fern Leaf is a cooling herb best suited for heat and damp-heat conditions. It should be used with care in those with cold or deficiency patterns, as excessive use may deplete yang energy.
