Common Rush Whole (Juncus effusus) is the dried pith of the rush plant, a slender aquatic herb long valued in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for its calming, cooling, and diuretic properties. Known in TCM as Deng Xin Cao, this light, porous herb is prized for its ability to clear heat, promote urination, and calm the spirit, making it both a soothing and purifying remedy.

In classical usage, Common Rush is described as sweet, bland, and slightly cold in nature, entering the Heart, Lung, and Small Intestine channels. It is commonly prescribed to alleviate irritability, insomnia, and restlessness caused by heat in the Heart, as well as to ease urinary discomfort and promote gentle diuresis. It is often combined with other cooling herbs in formulas that clear heat and promote emotional balance.

Beyond its calming effects, Deng Xin Cao is also used in pediatric applications to relieve childhood sleep disturbances, sore throat, and mild fevers. Its mild and neutral quality makes it suitable for sensitive or weakened constitutions.

Modern studies of Juncus effusus have identified phenolic acids, flavonoids, and lignans associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild sedative activity, supporting its traditional use for relaxation, urinary health, and heat-clearing functions.

Each batch of Common Rush Whole (Juncus effusus) is carefully harvested from clean aquatic environments and dried to preserve its natural fiber structure, light fragrance, and therapeutic integrity. When decocted, it produces a clear, subtle infusion used in formulas for restlessness, sleeplessness, and urinary heat.
